Microdermabrasion: Treating with Exfoliating Crystals
Confused as to what microdermabrasion is or does? It is easy to become overwhelmed by the wealth of skin care options available. Many procedures diminish the appearance of scars, wrinkles and other skin imperfection by increasing the production of healthy skin cells. When skin is lost, the body responds by producing new skin to heal and replace what it is missing.
Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that removes outermost layer of skin with a motorized rough wire brush or a burr containing abrasive particles. This procedure is often conducted under local anesthesia or with a numbing spray, such as Freon. After the procedure, the face is red and swollen.
Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications to treat the pain and discomfort that will be felt while talking and eating. You will need to stay home from work for 2 weeks. Any activity where you might bump your face should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. It may take 3 weeks for the redness to face. Sun should be avoided for 6-12 months until normal pigmentation has returned to your skin. Full recovery of skin requires 12 months; until then, don't think about repeating the procedure.
Microdermabrasion treatments utilize a tool that sprays microscopic crystals to exfoliate away 10-15 microns of skin. For those skin problems deeper than 10-15 microns, microdermabrasion results are less effective. Microdermabrasion for acne removal is effective for those with mild to moderate acne.
Microdermabrasion does not require even local anesthesia. Another benefit is that it can be used on the sensitive skin of the neck, a common problem area.
Skin will be red and irritated after a treatment, however, one is able to continue life as normal leaving the surgeon's office. 6-12 treatments is typically necessary.
After factoring all costs (anesthesia, hospital, consultations, etc.), dermabrasion can cost form $2000 to $4000, depending on the degree of the procedure. Microdermabrasion cost is less and spread out over the course of the treatments, typically between $70 and $250 per treatment. Alternatively, microdermabrasion at home kits are available where you throw in a one time cost for a home system as well microdermabrasion products, mostly creams, that mimic the abrasion undergone.
Microdermabrasion: How it Works
The friction from the microdermabrasion crystals rubbing against your skin removes damaged and mature skin cells. As the body responds naturally to heal and protect against irritants, this action increases normal skin cell production. Microdermabrasion activates the production of skin cells to replace those lost. Skin matrix is better organized with larger and healthier skin cells.
The dermal layer of the skin is most affected when microdermabrasion is undergone. Collagen production is increased because fibroblast numbers increase. Collagen fibers are what give our skin its thickness and stretch the skin. Elastin fibers are related to skin elasticity and multiply in response to exfoliation. Microdermabrasion doesn't just get rid of damaged or dead skin. It improves the skin that replaces it.
