Treating Fear Of Vomit With Hypnotism

by Alan Densky

Many people have emetophobia, yet this fear is rarely discussed in the open. This phobia is a fear of vomit. People afflicted with serious emetophobia will do anything it takes to avoid vomiting or seeing vomit. Even though emetophobics typically cope by avoiding the source of their fear, it can be cured using therapies like Ericksonian hypnosis therapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Emetophobia is a common phobia with far ranging implications for its sufferers. Some people will not eat out or with other people out of fear of getting a foodborne illness. Expecting mothers with emetophobia may be terrified of getting morning sickness. Emetophobia also makes it hard for mothers and fathers to raise their infants or tend to their young kids if they get ill.

The phobia can seriously affect one's ability or willingness to go on trips and vacations. A phobia sufferer might dread the thought of going to a foreign country and falling ill. Many individuals will avoid public places because they fear getting sick or even seeing another person getting sick. The phobia also affects one's capacity to have jobs in certain fields, such as nursing and hospital work.

Emetophobia is often caused by childhood cases of vomiting. Emetophobics may recall the unpleasant feeling of being ill and wish to avoid it at all costs. They may also dread getting ill because they link it with a loss of physical control. Emetophobia affects men and women of all ages and backgrounds.

The phobia can grow into other anxiety disorders and phobias. Many people develop agoraphobia, a fear of unfamiliar places which can drive a person to become a "shut-in." People with emetophobia may also possess a strong fear of germs. What starts as the fear of vomit can rapidly grow into a number of serious conditions caused by the first fear.

Many people attempt to cope with their emetophobia by avoiding it whenever possible, but the phobia can be cured with options ranging from therapy to medication. However, there are a number of unique challenges associated with treating emetophobia. After a long period of time, the phobia becomes associated with overwhelmingly negative imagery in the unconscious mind. The feeling is so deeply rooted that it cannot be stifled by willpower or conscious effort alone. Sufferers may realize that their fear is overblown, yet continue to feel powerless to relieve their condition.

Hypnotherapy is a wonderful tool for curing phobias because it can dissociate or disconnect a fear from negative associations in the unconscious mind. Hypnosis is a form of safe and non-invasive therapy that provides a permanent phobia cure.

Hypnotic treatments are often in the form of a program composed of several, easy-to-understand sessions. A thorough program opens with relaxation therapy. This has a calming effect and helps make the mind more open to hypnosis. Once a person is tranquil and tension-free, hypnotherapy directs the unconscious mind into adopting a new, phobia-free line of thought.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy works well for indepedent thinkers, such as the majority of emetophobia sufferers who find it important to have control over their own health and well-being. It works by using indirect suggestions placed in stories, metaphors, and dialogues. It offers an alternative to traditional hypnosis techniques, which use direct post-hypnotic suggestions to treat single phobias. These conventional techniques may not work because most people will question and resist direct suggestions. These issues can be circumvented using Ericksonian hypnosis therapy.

Because emetophobia frequently occurs other anxiety disorders such as germophobia and agoraphobia, it is necessary for a good treatment program to work for all these issues. Ericksonian hypnosis therapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques have an advantage over traditional hypnosis programs because they are not specific to one phobia; they can be used to treat any phobia, or even more than one phobia. Additionally, the combined program will work for most users because it includes a range of techniques to work for any person.

People are often surprised at the ease with which they get results using hypnotherapy. It has helped many people easily overcome their fears and it is a popular form of phobia treatment. The techniques within Ericksonian hypnosis therapy and NLP are effective treatments for a variety of phobias and anxiety disorders. The techniques hold the key to success for helping many emetophobia sufferers vanquish their phobias and feel comfortable and in control.
