Severe Acne: Causes and Tips on How to Eliminate it

by Susan Lane

There are two types of categories for acne, severe and mild. Blackheads, whiteheads and pustules are some of the mild types of acne, these are also the most common type of acne. There are also various types of severe acne, the one that we are going to look closer at in this article is cystic acne.

Cystic acne is considered the worst form of acne that exists. Its consequences are more serious than other types of acne. One of the main characteristics of this type of acne is a deep infection in the tissue that can form nodules. Another name for this is acne vulgaris. Acne cysts or acne nodules, are formed when sebum cannot properly outflow to the surface of the skin and causes lesions to the cells lining the walls of the sebum canals. Once this occurs, the pores become blocked and inflamed due to the immune system trying to fight off the infection. When there are a lot of bacteria, the immune system reacts more powerfully; this often results in a larger size pimple, better known as an acne cyst.

As these powerful attacks occur, the body produces a substance called sebum. If the flow of sebum exceeds the normal level, bacteria in the follicles and skin surface will produce a larger infection. Moreover, the excess of sebum on the skin helps increase the appearance of large pimples caused by greater inflammations, bacterial and an oil surplus.

Understanding Cystic Acne

Facial cysts can become even worse thanks to a condition called retention keratosis. When skin cells, especially those that cover hair follicles are disposed improperly, the retention occurs. Also, dead and damaged cells become an easy target for bacterial infections. The bacteria may then pass over to other areas which causes acne cysts to worsen.

Another factor that may contribute to nodulocystic acne is hormones. Certain hormones such as testosterone and androgen can cause the production of sebum to increase. It is necessary that the sebum ducts be clear in order to prevent them from getting clogged and decreasing the risk of the cysts formation. Other factors such as genetic background and lifestyle of a person can determine the severity of the acne. Stress behavior can contribute to or even increase acne.

Even though this type of acne is severe there are acne treatment products that can help heal acne cysts. A helpful option is an oral medication called Accutane. It works by reducing the size of the oil glands and thereby controlling acne production. Although this medication has a high rate of success, there are also dangerous risks such as depression. It is recommended that this drug only be taken if all other methods have failed.

Another treatment available is a cortisone injection which can be administered by a dermatologist. This method gives excellent results since it reduces the inflammation and redness of the skin without any pain for the patient. The outcome is a flatter pimple that can be easily covered up. Some of the problems that may occur after receiving the injection are temporary skin discoloration and bleeding.

It is complicated to cure cystic acne however there are treatments for it. This type of acne requires a special acne skin care treatment since some could worsen the condition. Cystic acne can also be treated with natural products designed to improve the skin in many ways.
